Rio Airport to Paraty: GIG & SDU Transport Guide
The connection nobody warns you about: no intercity bus leaves from either Rio airport, so your arrival day is longer than the map suggests.

Not what you’re after? If you are already in Rio city and travelling to Paraty on a separate day, the main Rio to Paraty guide is the one you want.
You have landed at Galeão (GIG) or Santos Dumont (SDU) and Paraty is 250 km down the coast. There are two genuinely different ways to close that gap, and the choice is mostly decided by what time your plane touches down.
The two routes
| Public-transport chain | Private transfer | |
|---|---|---|
| Total time | 6–7½ h typically | 3½–5 h |
| Legs | 3–4 separate legs | 1 |
| Priced per | Person, three times over | Vehicle, once |
| Waiting | Airport bus, then terminal wait | None |
| Luggage | You carry it through two buildings | Loaded once |
| If your flight is late | Every onward leg is at risk | Driver waits |
Route 1: the public-transport chain
Four steps, each of which can go wrong independently.
Step 1 — Airport to Novo Rio. From GIG, the airport executive bus (the frescão) runs to the city and stops at Novo Rio; a taxi or Uber does the same more directly. Allow 40–90 minutes depending on traffic and time of day. From SDU it is much shorter — the terminal is close — but still not zero.
Step 2 — Novo Rio. Buy your Paraty ticket at the Viação Costa Verde counter if you have not booked online. Novo Rio is large, busy and signposted mostly in Portuguese. Allow 30–60 minutes here, more in high season when the next departure with seats may not be the next departure on the board.
Step 3 — Novo Rio to Paraty. The coach itself: 4h30m–5h45m, with a rest stop. Comfortable and unremarkable.
Step 4 — Paraty rodoviária to your pousada. About a kilometre to the historic centre. Ten to fifteen minutes on foot without much luggage, or a short taxi.
Aggregator route-planners typically total this chain at 6 to 7½ hours. That is realistic if everything connects. It does not include the time between landing and actually leaving the terminal — immigration, baggage and customs at GIG can absorb an hour on their own after a long-haul arrival.
Route 2: the private transfer
One vehicle, one journey, meets you in arrivals. Aggregators listed GIG–Paraty private transfers around US$55–75 for the smallest vehicle class and a journey of roughly 3h26m at our last check; other listings sat higher for larger vehicles. Treat those as indicative — they are per vehicle, they scale with vehicle size, and they are quoted by resellers rather than by us.
What you are actually buying, in order of how much it matters:
- Flight tracking. A booked transfer watches your flight number. A bus does not.
- The removal of three transitions. No airport bus, no terminal, no arrival taxi.
- Two to three hours of your first day back.
- Not carrying luggage through a bus station after a night on a plane.
Working backwards from your landing time
This is the calculation that actually decides your arrival day.
| Landing time at GIG | Public-transport chain | Private transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Before 09:00 | Comfortable. Plenty of departures left. | Easy. Paraty by early afternoon. |
| 09:00–12:00 | Workable. Aim for an early-afternoon coach. | Easy. Paraty mid-to-late afternoon. |
| 12:00–14:00 | Tight. One delay and you are on an evening departure. | Fine. Arrive around dusk. |
| 14:00–17:00 | Not advisable. You would arrive very late, if at all. | Possible. Late arrival, dark roads. |
| After 17:00 | No. Spend the night in Rio. | Only if your pousada accepts a late check-in. |
Two practical constraints sit behind that table. First, small pousadas in Paraty often have staffed reception hours rather than a 24-hour desk — confirm late check-in before you plan a late arrival, not after. Second, the coastal section of the BR-101 is winding and unlit in stretches; there is nothing dramatic about driving it at night, but nobody enjoys it after a transatlantic flight.
Should you break the journey in Rio instead?
For most travellers arriving from Europe or North America: yes, and it is usually the better trip as well as the easier one.
A long-haul arrival plus a five-hour road journey means your first day in Brazil is entirely spent in transit. One night in Rio — even a functional airport-area hotel — turns that into a morning departure with a clear head and a full afternoon in Paraty.
The exception is a short trip where every night counts, or a daytime regional arrival where you land rested at 10:00. Then push straight on.
GIG or SDU: does it matter?
Barely, for this leg.
SDU (Santos Dumont) is right by the city centre and closer to Novo Rio, so the first step of the chain is shorter. It handles mostly domestic flights.
GIG (Galeão) is further out and handles most international arrivals. The extra distance to Novo Rio is real but modest.
The road journey to Paraty is essentially identical from either. Choose your flight on schedule and price; do not pay a premium for SDU on the assumption that it materially shortens the day.
If you are heading to Ilha Grande instead
The arrival-day arithmetic is different and stricter, because there is a boat at the end of it with a last departure of the day. Landing at 15:00 for Paraty is merely inconvenient; landing at 15:00 for Ilha Grande can mean an unplanned night on the mainland. That is covered in the GIG to Ilha Grande guide.
Our honest recommendation
If there are one or two of you, you land in the morning, and you are not in a hurry — take the airport bus to Novo Rio and get the coach. It works, it is cheap, and thousands of people do it every week.
If you land in the afternoon, there are four or five of you, you have real luggage, or you have small children — the private transfer is the rational purchase on this specific leg, and we would say so even if we had no interest in it. Arrival day is the day when the difference between the two options is largest.
Frequently asked
- Is there a direct bus from GIG to Paraty?
- No. Viação Costa Verde departs from Terminal Rodoviário Novo Rio, not from the airport. You must reach Novo Rio first, which adds roughly 40 to 90 minutes.
- How long does GIG to Paraty take in total?
- A private transfer runs roughly 3½ to 5 hours depending on traffic. The public-transport chain — airport bus, terminal wait, intercity coach, arrival transfer — is commonly quoted at 6 to 7½ hours.
- What is the latest I can land and still reach Paraty the same day?
- By private transfer, a mid-evening landing still works, though you will arrive very late. By public transport, treat a landing after roughly 14:00 as risky, because you need to catch a Novo Rio departure with the terminal transfer built in.
- Should I fly into GIG or SDU for Paraty?
- It makes little difference to the road journey. SDU is closer to the city centre and to Novo Rio; GIG handles most international arrivals. Pick on flight schedule, not on the Paraty leg.
- Is it better to spend the first night in Rio?
- For most long-haul arrivals, yes. A five-hour road journey immediately after an overnight flight is a poor use of your first day, and pousada check-in in Paraty is easier in daylight.
