Ilha Grande ↔ Paraty & getting home
Paraty to Rio Airport (GIG & SDU): Planning Your Departure Day
The one leg on this coast where we routinely say pay for the private transfer — not for comfort, but because a missed international flight costs more than every other saving on your trip combined.

Not what you’re after? For the inbound version of this journey, where the stakes are much lower, see the Rio airport to Paraty guide.
The journey
Roughly 250 km up the BR-101 from Paraty to Rio, then onward to the airport. Expect 4½ to 6 hours of road, plus:
- By bus: the coach terminates at Terminal Rodoviário Novo Rio, not at an airport. You then need a further 40 to 90 minutes to GIG (less to SDU), by airport bus or taxi.
- By private transfer: straight to the terminal door, one journey.
So the honest totals are roughly 5½ to 7½ hours by bus and 4½ to 6 hours by private car, measured from your pousada door to the check-in queue.
Why northbound is slower than southbound
Three things work against you on the way out that did not on the way in.
Sunday and long-weekend traffic. The Costa Verde is a weekend destination for Rio and São Paulo. On Sunday afternoons and at the end of Brazilian holiday weekends, the northbound BR-101 carries everyone going home at once. An hour or more over the normal time is routine, not exceptional.
Rio's own traffic. You are arriving into a metropolitan area of twelve million people, not leaving one at 07:00. The final 40 km can take as long as the previous 150.
The extra leg. Coming in, the airport-to-Novo-Rio transfer happens when you are fresh and nothing is at stake. Going out, it happens at the end, when the clock is running.
Working backwards
This is the whole guide, really. Pick your flight time and read across.
| Flight departs GIG | By private transfer, leave Paraty | By bus | Our honest advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 06:00–09:00 | Not viable same day | Not viable same day | Stay in Rio the night before |
| 09:00–12:00 | Not viable same day | Not viable same day | Stay in Rio the night before |
| 12:00–15:00 | 03:00–05:00 | Not advisable | Possible, but brutal. Consider the night before. |
| 15:00–18:00 | 05:00–07:00 | 04:00–05:00, tightly | Workable with a transfer |
| 18:00–22:00 | 07:00–09:00 | 05:00–07:00 | Comfortable |
The numbers assume three hours at the airport before an international departure and at least two hours of road contingency on top of expected journey time. That contingency is not padding. It is the difference between a traffic jam being an inconvenience and being a rebooking fee.
The three ways to do it
Bus, then airport connection. Cheapest. Viação Costa Verde from the Paraty rodoviária to Novo Rio, then the airport bus or a taxi. Perfectly reasonable for an evening flight with a large margin. Two separate timetables, neither of which knows about your flight.
Private transfer. Door to check-in, one vehicle, a departure time you choose, and — this is the point — a driver who has your flight number. Priced per vehicle, so it splits well across a group. This is the leg where we recommend it most consistently.
Ride-hailing. No. Paraty's ride-hailing supply is thin, and there is no reliable coverage at 05:00. The reasoning is in the Uber guide; the summary is that this is exactly the situation where its failure mode is unaffordable.
GIG or SDU
GIG (Galeão) handles most international departures and is further from the city — the extra 30–40 minutes matters on a tight day.
SDU (Santos Dumont) is right by the centre, closer to Novo Rio, and mostly domestic. If you are connecting through São Paulo, check which Rio airport your onward flight leaves from; the difference to your departure timing is real.
If you are coming from Ilha Grande instead
Then you have a boat in the chain as well, and boats are cancellable in a way roads are not.
Do not attempt Ilha Grande to a same-day international flight. Come off the island the day before at minimum, and preferably spend that night in Rio. A single weather cancellation on the crossing removes every option you have, because there is no bridge and no alternative route. The island-to-Paraty routings all have the same exposure.
Practical points for departure morning
- Confirm your pickup or your bus the day before. Not the week before.
- Get to the Paraty rodoviária early. It is a kilometre from the historic centre and the centre's cobbles are slow with luggage.
- Eat before you go. The rest stop is roughly halfway and not guaranteed to suit your timing.
- Have your airline's app installed so a delay works in your favour rather than being a surprise.
- Keep some cash. Not everything on this route is card-friendly.
Why this is the leg we would sell you
We spend most of this site telling people they do not need a private transfer, and we mean it. This is the exception, and the reason is not comfort.
On every other leg, the downside of the cheap option is lost time — an hour in a terminal, a slower journey, some bag-wrangling. On this leg, the downside is a missed international flight, which costs more than every other saving on your trip combined and ruins the last day of a holiday you spent a year planning.
That is not a reason to buy the most expensive thing on offer. It is a reason to buy certainty on this specific leg and stay cheap everywhere else — which is, more or less, the whole argument of this site.
Frequently asked
- How long does Paraty to Rio airport take?
- Around 4½ to 6 hours by road for roughly 250 km, plus the leg from Novo Rio to the airport if you are travelling by bus. Sunday afternoons and the end of Brazilian long weekends run longer.
- How much buffer should I leave before an international flight?
- Plan to be at GIG three hours before an international departure, and build at least two hours of road contingency on top of the expected journey. For a morning flight, travel the day before and stay near the airport.
- Is there a direct bus from Paraty to GIG?
- No. The Costa Verde coach terminates at Terminal Rodoviário Novo Rio, and you then need a separate connection to the airport — typically 40 to 90 minutes depending on traffic.
- Should I stay a night in Rio before flying home?
- For a morning international departure, almost always yes. It converts an uncontrollable five-hour road journey into a short, predictable airport run.
- Can I rely on Uber to leave Paraty early in the morning?
- No. Ride-hailing supply in Paraty is thin and there is no guarantee of a car at 05:00. Do not build a departure around it.
