Rio to Ilha Grande Private Transfer: How the Car + Boat Journey Works

The road leg is easy. The boat leg has a timetable. What you are really buying is somebody taking responsibility for the join between them.

Not what you’re after? For the DIY versions of this journey and a comparison of the three mainland ports, see the main Rio to Ilha Grande guide.

What the journey actually consists of

Leg 1 — road. A vehicle collects you in Rio and drives you to a mainland port, usually Conceição de Jacareí: roughly 2½ to 3 hours, more in Rio's traffic.

Leg 2 — sea. A boat from the port to Vila do Abraão: about 20 to 30 minutes from Conceição de Jacareí, longer from Angra dos Reis.

Leg 3 — you. From the pier to your pousada, on foot. There are no cars on the island, so every transfer ends at the pier, no matter what you paid. If a listing implies door-to-door delivery to your accommodation on Ilha Grande, it is describing something that cannot exist.

The three shapes this product comes in

Operators sell what look like similar things. They are not.

Shape 1 — Private car, scheduled boat, one booking. The common version. Your own vehicle to the port, then a seat on a regular scheduled crossing, both under one reference. Works well; the connection is only as good as the operator's willingness to move you to a later boat.

Shape 2 — Private car, chartered boat. A boat for your group alone, leaving when you arrive. Expensive, and only worth it for a large group, an unusual arrival time, or an arrival after the scheduled boats have stopped.

Shape 3 — Shared van, scheduled boat. Not private at all, but frequently found in the same search results. Cheaper, several hotel pickups, a longer day. A perfectly good product — just not the one you thought you were comparing.

The prices for these overlap enough that you can easily buy the wrong one. Read what the boat actually is.

What you are really paying for

Not the seat. On the road, a private car saves very little time over a coach — both cover the same BR-101 at the same speed.

You are paying for three things:

1. The removal of transitions. Doing this yourself means: taxi to Novo Rio, coach to Conceição de Jacareí, walk to the pier, buy a boat ticket, board. That is four transitions with luggage. A transfer has one.

2. Ownership of the connection. With a coach and a separately-bought boat ticket, nobody is responsible for the gap between them. If the coach is 90 minutes late, that is your problem alone. This is the actual value on this specific journey, and it is why we recommend a through-booking here more readily than on the Rio–Paraty road leg, where there is no boat to miss.

3. Certainty about the vehicle. Four people with four large suitcases do not fit in a standard car. A transfer booked for four with luggage arrives as something that fits four with luggage.

Questions worth asking before you pay

Most listings do not answer these. Asking is not rude; it is the difference between the two products described at the top of this page.

  • Is the boat a scheduled service or a charter?
  • Who operates the boat — you, or a third party?
  • If the road leg is delayed, do you hold the boat or rebook me?
  • What is the last boat of the day for my date?
  • Where exactly does the vehicle drop me — which port, which pier?
  • If the crossing is cancelled for weather, what happens?
  • Are child seats included? Never assume. Confirm explicitly.

When we would actually recommend this

Yes, if: you are arriving on a fixed day with a boat cut-off to make; there are four or more of you; you have real suitcases; you are coming straight from an international flight; or you are travelling with small children who will not enjoy Novo Rio at the end of a long morning.

No, if: there are one or two of you with backpacks and a flexible day. Take the Costa Verde coach to Conceição de Jacareí and buy a boat ticket at the pier. It costs a fraction as much, it works, and the crossing is the nicest part of the journey either way.

Consider instead: if your arrival is genuinely marginal, spend the night in Angra dos Reis and take a morning boat. A mainland hotel plus a cheap morning crossing is often better value — and a better trip — than a transfer that gets you to the water twenty minutes late.

On pricing

We do not publish our own prices for this route. Local partner arrangements are still being confirmed, and a plausible-looking invented number would tell you nothing except that we were prepared to invent one.

What we will tell you is the shape: this is charged per vehicle for the road leg and often per person for the boat leg, which means it does not scale the way a pure private transfer does. For a group of five, ask for the breakdown between the two legs before you compare it against anything else.

Frequently asked

What does a Rio to Ilha Grande private transfer include?
Normally a private vehicle from your Rio address to a mainland port, plus a place on a boat to Vila do Abraão. What differs between operators is whether the boat is a scheduled service or a charter, and what happens if the road leg runs late.
Does the transfer take me to my pousada on the island?
No. There are no cars on Ilha Grande. Every transfer ends at the pier in Vila do Abraão and you walk from there.
What happens if traffic makes me miss the boat?
It depends entirely on whether one company controls both legs. Ask this explicitly before booking — it is the single most important question and the one most listings do not answer.
Is a private transfer faster than the bus and boat?
On the road, only slightly. The saving comes from removing the trip to Novo Rio, the terminal, and the walk or taxi to the pier — worth roughly one to two hours in total.
Can a transfer be cancelled because of weather?
The boat leg can. Rough seas stop small-boat crossings regardless of what you paid. No transfer product can override the sea.
